A Ranking of Every Song from Starstruck

Welcome Back to Disney! I hoped you enjoyed my post last week where I created A Definitive Ranking of Every Song from Lemonade Mouth. To continue with my ranking of songs from all the DCOM musicals, this week I decided to do A Ranking of Every Song from Starstruck. If you remember from one of my earlier blog posts, where I ranked the Top Ten Disney Channel Original Movies, then you know that Starstruck was included in that list. Starstruck is one of the greatest DCOMs of all time and one of my favorites because of the beach/summer setting, overall message, the characters, the storyline, the drama, the relationships, and of course the music. Again, like most DCOM musicals, the music is what makes this movie such a hit. I mean I remember as a kid playing this soundtrack on repeat in my backyard singing all the songs at the top of my lungs. Therefore, these are reasons why I thought it would be fun to do a ranking of every song from the movie.

A brief note before we begin: this ranking includes all the songs that were included only in the movie, including the one from the deluxe DVD version. So, the only song that I did not include in this ranking was the version of "Something About the Sunshine" with just the girl (Anna Margaret) singing. Also, when I am ranking these songs, I am also ranking the performances of them in the movie. So, not just the song itself but the overall scene/performance of it in the movie. Now let's get into A Ranking of Every Song from Starstruck

(from last to first)...

#11 Make A Movie

This is my least favorite song from Starstruck just because it's not one that really stands out to me. I actually don't even remember which scene from the movie this song is from. So, it's one of the most forgettable songs from the movie. I think it's just a song that they played in the background of a scene. But again, I don't know which one. There's really not much I have to say about this song. It's a cute little dance song for the movie, but that's really it.

#10 Welcome to Hollywood

This is also one of my least favorites from the movie just because it's not the most memorable. As it plays in the background of the scene when Christopher Wilde is greeting guests at his house party. I like the beginning and the chorus but then it just kind of gets repetitive and boring. But the chorus is definitely a catchy one. It's like the song starts out slow, then it gets hype, then slow, then hype again. It doesn't stay at one of those levels. I don't know, just something about the song doesn't hit for me. But it's placement in the movie is fine and makes sense with the scene. The lyrics and meaning of the song are also pretty deep. When he (Mitchel Musso) sings "And boy ya better live it up/ Before it brings you down/ Welcome to Hollywood". That is such a true statement and can be relatable to those that have been to Hollywood or live in Hollywood. But, since this song is just about Hollywood, something I can't relate to at all, it goes lower on this list.

#9 Got to Believe

This is not my favorite song from Starstruck because again it's not the most memorable. I hadn't even ever heard this song or seen this scene from the movie until a couple years ago when I found it on YouTube, because it's a bonus scene that was only included on the deluxe version of the DVD. I definitely think they could have just included this song in the movie when it originally premiered on Disney Channel. As it would have made sense for the movie. I like the kind of rock and roll vibe of the song. The scene itself is nothing special, as it's just Christopher Wilde singing this song in the studio. However, it does have a good message. It's all about believing that where you are or what you're doing is where you are meant to be and what you're meant to be doing. Not listening to what others have to say about who you should be or what you should do. So, that's a really great message. Again, it's a good song from the movie but there are others that are better. Also, does parts of this song remind anyone else of the chorus from "I Don't Want To Be" by Gavin DeGraw. I don't know, but every time I hear the beginning of this song it makes me think of that other song for some reason.

#8 New Boyfriend

I had a really hard time ranking this song, because I do like it, but I wasn't sure if it deserved to be higher or lower. But I ultimately put it lower on this list because even though it's super catchy, fun, upbeat and makes me happy, it's still not better than some of the others that will be mentioned later. This song plays in the background when Jessica and her sister just arrive to the school dance. Even though it's not the most distinct song from the movie, it's still a fun song that just puts a smile on your face when you listen to it. I love the beginning of the song with the instrumental trumpet and flute before the real beat comes in with the vocals. I also love the message of the song. As the title suggests, the song is about all the things a girl wants/expects from a good boyfriend. Such things as someone who appreciates all the things that make her so great, treats her like a superstar, and can always keep a smile on her face. Things all girls should want from a boyfriend. Basically, saying if he doesn't give you that and more than to know that there are always more, better fish in the sea.

#7 Shades

Although, this is not my most favorite song from Starstruck, it's still a good song and one of the most memorable. As it is played at the beginning when Christopher Wilde performs it at Alexis Bender's birthday party at the "Under 21 Club". It's very catchy and yes, it's also very repetitive but it's one of those good repetitive songs. This song is just a classic from the movie. It could keep playing and playing and I wouldn't even know after 30 minutes of it playing that it was supposed to already end. It's another fun and upbeat song with a little rapping part from Stubby (Brandon Mychal Smith), as well. This song just makes you want to put on some shades and party it up.

#6 Party Up

Again, this is another very catchy and repetitive song from the movie, but a good one. This song is also one of the most unforgettable because it is the very last song played in the movie at the school dance. This song obviously just gets you really hype and makes you want to dance and party, hence the name. This song/scene is definitely a highlight of the movie and although it's not my most favorite, it's still up there.

#5 What You Mean To Me

This song is played during the school dance party when Christopher Wilde surprises everyone, mostly Jessica, and sings this song to her in front of everyone and the press. This song/scene is really emotional and heartwarming. It's a really sweet moment between the two main characters (Christopher & Jessica). It's a really sweet message. As the title suggests, it's just about Christopher saying sorry to Jessica and letting her know what she means to him and how she's changed him for the better. This song just gives you all the feels. It definitely makes me feel the most emotional while watching it.

#4 Hero (Unplugged)

I love this song from Starstruck as it is an un-skippable, must-listen song from the movie and soundtrack. This is the acoustic, slower version of the song. I do, however, prefer the much faster and upbeat version of this song a little better, which is why this one is ranked a little lower on this list. But I still love this song/scene from the movie. Christopher Wilde sings this during the house party night scene (we love a good night scene number). With Jessica watching and listening overhead from the balcony of his guestroom. He looks up to her multiple times making it seem like he's really singing the song to her and about her even though they just met. So, it's a really sweet song/scene from the movie. Definitely another highlight of the movie. I love the message of the song, as well. Basically, it's all about, as the title suggests, him saying that he might not have fancy things or be able to tell you everything you want to hear, but if you're the one for him he will be your hero and he'll wait until it's meant to be if he has to. I don't know if that's right, but that's what I get from the song when I listen to it.

#3 Something About the Sunshine

I love, love, love this song from Starstruck. It gives you all the summer vibes. This song is so good that they actually put two versions of it on the soundtrack. This one with the girl and boy singing together and the other with just the girl singing, which I did not include the latter version on this list since it wasn't technically in the movie. Having said that I do prefer this one just because it makes more sense for the movie at least, that the boy and girl are singing the song to each other. From the two main characters (Christopher & Jessica) singing this song in the car to the song playing while they are touring around Los Angeles, I love everything about this scene in the movie. It's definitely one of the best scenes in the movie. Let alone the song itself is everything, as well. It's upbeat, fun, and everything in-between. It is also the song/scene that makes me feel the most nostalgic when I watch and listen to it.

#2 Hero

This is the more upbeat version of the song I ranked at #4. I usually like the slower, acoustic versions of songs, but I actually really like this much faster and upbeat version better than the unplugged version. I also like the scene better, too. As it's like a montage of different scenes with this song in the forefront. It goes from Jessica and Christopher Wilde separating at the beach and her in a phone booth to Christopher Wilde singing this song in the studio among other small scenes in-between. This montage of scenes playing gives the song a very different feel than the scene at his house when he sang the same song acoustically. The sad, emotional scenes change the whole mood of the song in a way, which I love. As when you just listen to the song just by itself, not putting the scenes in perspective, it's not as sad as the scenes make it out to be. As this song is a pretty happy song. I also love the message of the song as I mentioned previously. The only thing that I don't like about this song, but that you only hear on the soundtrack, is the weird sound at the very beginning when the song starts. The first 5 seconds, that piano key sound that's different from the whole rest of the song's beat. It makes me think that I'm listening to the wrong song, because you don't hear that part of the song in the movie.

#1 Starstruck

This is the BEST song from Starstruck because it's the opening song/scene in the movie and therefore obviously the most memorable. Obviously, it's the title of the movie for a reason. I love everything about this song in the movie. The beat, the lyrics, the vibe it gives off, just everything about it. The song itself is better than the scene, as the scene is just the song playing over the beginning credits overlooking the city lights then it goes to Christopher Wilder performing at the Staples Center that Jessica and her sister end up seeing on their TV at home. But, overall how could you not say that this is your favorite song from Starstruck? This song just makes me want to sing at the top of my lungs every time I hear it. It's also very catchy and when the beat drops and you hear him sing the "Oh oh, yeah" it makes me get so hype to listen to the song and watch the movie. This is also the only song from the movie that Sterling Knight (who plays the main character Christopher Wilde) actually sings, so that also makes it the best.

Well, that concludes A Ranking of Every Song from Starstruck. Creating this list was much more difficult than I thought it would be. But I feel like I finally got it down to what I feel are the least and most best songs/scenes from the movie. I just recently, over the summer, re-watched this movie and now I already want to go back and watch it again. I also highly suggest that you do the same because Starstruck is a must-watch DCOM. Especially, in the summer. I would love to know your favorite songs from Starstruck, as well. So, let me know in the comments below and come Back to Disney next week for more!
