A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Miranda Cosgrove's Sparks Fly Album (in honor of its 16th Anniversary)

Welcome Back to Disney (& More)!๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ‰I hope you enjoyed my last post on A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Miranda Cosgrove’s About You Now EP, and that you’re ready for some more NOSTALGIC FUN down music memory lane.๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฟ๐Ÿฅณ ‘Cause today, as promised, and in honor of its 16th ANNIVERSARY, we’re continuing with Miranda Cosgrove’s ICONIC discography and talking all about her second, but ABSOLUTE BEST album, Sparks Fly. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฟ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š✨

Sparks Fly is unfortunately THE ONLY studio album by American actress and singer Miranda Cosgrove, released on April 27, 2010, by Sony Music.๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’ฟ๐ŸŽถMiranda Cosgrove began planning this FIRST album with the Columbia label in 2008, after she made her musical debut on the iCarly soundtrack. So, it was recorded from 2008 to 2010. Musically, Sparks Fly is a pop record that incorporates electro-pop and pop-rock elements. Contributions to the album’s production came from several producers, including Max Martin, Rock Mafia, the Matrix, Espionage, Desmond Child and Rivers Cuomo, among others. Very few of those names I’ve heard before, but I’m assuming they’re big names and were probably important to include here for a little history about this album.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š

As I mentioned in my last post, Miranda Cosgrove's musical career first began with her recording the theme song, “Leave It All to Me”, for the Nickelodeon TV series iCarly. A show in which Miranda starred as the titular character.๐Ÿ“บ๐ŸŽถOn June 10, 2008, following the success of iCarly, Columbia Records released a soundtrack album of the show, which included four songs recorded by Miranda Cosgrove. When it came to that soundtrack album, Miranda once stated, “Before that, I didn't see myself making an album, but when I spent time in the studio doing the theme song and saw how much fun it was, I wanted to go back."

So, in July 2008, Miranda Cosgrove officially announced plans for a solo album, stating that the album was "different" from her contributions to the iCarly soundtrack, with her "co-writing and getting really into it," and saying that "[I'm] playing a character on iCarly, but this shows more of myself. Some people might think I'm just another actress putting out an album, but I wanted to prove that I'm more than that." And on February 3, 2009, Miranda Cosgrove released her debut solo recording; the five-song EP About You Now, exclusively onto the iTunes Store. An EP that you can read my thoughts about here.๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’ฟ๐ŸŽถ Then came Sparks Fly. Which as I briefly mentioned before, took two years to make. As Columbia Records’ marketing manager Chris Poppe stated in May 2010 that "Miranda started working on [the album] at 14, and she's 16 now. The difference between those two ages is huge, and the songs have had to grow along with her."

In February 2010, Miranda Cosgrove announced live in an interview with Ryan Seacrest that the album's first single would be titled “Kissin U”.๐ŸŽถ๐ŸฅณWhich was also, apparently, the first time the public had heard of that news. The album's title Sparks Fly comes from the first two words of "Kissin U". On March 12, 2010, the track list, including the four deluxe edition bonus tracks ("Brand New You", "What Are You Waiting For?", "Adored" and "Beautiful Mess"), was announced on Tommy2.net (Whatever that is.๐Ÿคท‍♀️). And the album artwork was revealed a bit later, on March 19, 2010. So the initial, official release of Sparks Fly only included EIGHT songs, but there were five other songs that were released at other times for other editions. One of those other songs being “Adored”, which was actually a free digital download two years BEFORE the album's official release. First as a rough mix, and later as a fully mastered version.๐Ÿ˜ฎ (Which I did not know that until now, having researched a bit about this album.) Another song that wasn’t included on the initial, original release of Sparks Fly, is "Charlie", which was released as a bonus track exclusively on the iTunes deluxe edition of the album.

Miranda Cosgrove has stated that for this album (Sparks Fly) she was trying to find her own style, so the album experiments with several different kinds of music. In an interview, Miranda Cosgrove also stated that she tried to put a little bit of her own flare into each and every song on the album. She described the album's lead single “Kissin U”, as "kind of a really happy, sweet song". When it comes to the main theme(s) of Sparks Fly, it generally deals with love and relationships. To which, apparently, Miranda Cosgrove has stated was unintentional, but she realized this after she had already picked all of the songs on the album.

While it’s an essentially pop album, Sparks Fly exhibits other elements and multi-tracked harmonies. For instance, "Kissin U", "Shakespeare", "Disgusting" and "Charlie" all feature a catchy pop tune. While "Adored", "What Are You Waiting For?" and "Hey You" are more of the pop ballad type. Other harmonies include the electro-pop tracks "BAM", "Oh Oh", "There Will Be Tears" and "Brand New You", the R&B track "Beautiful Mess" and the pop-rock-driven "Daydream". Like I briefly mentioned before, many songs on this album were produced by some of the biggest producers of the time. For instance, "BAM" was produced by Antonina Armato, (A name I’ve mentioned on this blog a few times before, because she has worked with Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez), Tim James and Rodney Jerkins (Who apparently have worked with Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Brandy, and Destiny’s Child.). Another GREAT song from this album, “Daydream”, was written by Avril Lavigne. And “Kissin U” and “Oh Oh” were both produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin, respectively, and apparently, THE BIGGEST producers of the time.

To no surprise, Sparks Fly was quite successful. As it sold 36,000 copies in its FIRST WEEK, and peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S. .๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘In March 2010 (my birthday month๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ‚), “Kissin U” was released as the sole single from Sparks Fly, and it peaked at #54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ However, of course, the album did receive mixed reviews from music critics.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ŽWith some complimenting Miranda Cosgrove’s vocal ability and likening it to that of Miley Cyrus. (Which I totally agree with that statement. Miranda Cosgrove’s vocal ability is definitely up there with Miley Cyrus’. I would even go as far as to say that they are two of the GREATEST female vocalists of my generation, for sure.) While others were unimpressed with Sparks Fly, and criticized the production and lyrical content, calling it predictable and unoriginal.๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ‘ŽI know. How dare they? Seriously.

To promote Sparks Fly, Miranda Cosgrove mainly did so through live performances. She performed the single, “Kissin U”, live at the 2010 Kids Choice Awards pre-show. On April 24, 2010, Nickelodeon also apparently aired a TV special titled 7 Secrets: Miranda Cosgrove, which was a half-hour show that revealed things about Miranda Cosgrove, such as how she got her start in the business to some of her most embarrassing moments. (I don’t remember that special. But, okay.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š) The days following the album's release, Miranda Cosgrove also did several album signings and appearances, including a stop at a Toys-R-Us in New York City. She (Miranda Cosgrove) also embarked on a radio promotional tour, and made appearances at radio concerts in the summer of 2010. Miranda Cosgrove performed “Kissin U”, “BAM” and “About You Now” on the Today Show on September 6, 2010. She also performed another song off the album, “Shakespeare”, on a “special” season 4 episode of iCarly titled “iDo”.๐Ÿ“บ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ’™ Where Miranda Cosgrove, in character as Carly Shay, performs the song during a wedding scene. As the bride is having second thoughts about her wedding due to her love for Carly’s older brother, Spencer. The song is sung by Carly to, apparently, remind the couple about how in love they are. And I had to look all of that up, because even though I definitely remember watching that episode  when it premiered, and many other times after that when I was younger, I haven’t watched it in many, MANY years and definitely blocked it out of my memory. So, I did remember her singing that song on the show, but I didn’t remember why she was singing it or anything else about that episode. Now, I've been reminded after doing a bit of research about this album. Her performance of that song was always the BEST part of that episode, though.

Like I briefly mentioned in my last post, Miranda Cosgrove also headlined her own tour in 2011, titled the Dancing Crazy Tour where she promoted both Sparks Fly and her follow-up EP High Maintenance. In fact, the tour was aptly named after her hit single “Dancing Crazy” that was released on her second EP (High Maintenance). And as I also mentioned in my last post, that tour began on January 22, 2011, and ended on August 10, 2011. The tour featured dates in House of Blues locations, such as those located in Houston, Texas and Anaheim, California. Miranda also performed at several theatres on the tour, including locations in cities such as Atlanta, Georgia, Tampa, Florida and Orlando Florida. And accompanying her (Miranda Cosgrove) on the tour was Greyson Chance, who rose to fame on YouTube. The Dancing Crazy Tour was financially successful. The second show on the tour, which took place in Minneapolis, sold about 54% of its tickets, and the show’s total gross revenue was $37,256.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘The fourth show of the tour, which took place in Rosemont, Illinois, was much more successful, selling 90% of the available tickets. The total gross revenue for that show was $118,435.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

As mentioned briefly before, "Kissin U” was the album's lead and ONLY single. Along with being the lead single from Sparks Fly, “Kissin U” and "Adored" were the only two songs that Miranda Cosgrove co-wrote for the album.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘The lyrics as well as the melody of “Kissin U”  were received positively by several music critics. On March 22, 2010, “Kissin U” was released on iTunes, and after hitting the digital tracks chart the previous week, it debuted at #87 on the Billboard Hot 100.๐Ÿ‘The song also eventually peaked at #54.๐Ÿ‘It was Miranda Cosgrove’s FIRST single to chart outside of the U.S., as well.๐Ÿ‘Entering the charts in Germany and Austria, among others.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ In Japan, "Daydream" and "Disgusting" were released exclusively on iTunes as promotional singles.

Like I also mentioned briefly before, the album sold 36,000 copies in its FIRST WEEK, earning it the eighth position on the Billboard 200 chart, on the issue dated May 5, 2010.๐Ÿ‘ And even though Sparks Fly spent one week inside the Top 10, it did fall out the next week, and the album also spent five weeks inside the Top 50, before quickly sliding down. But Sparks Fly had become successful in foreign countries, as well.๐Ÿ‘For instance, in Mexico, the album debuted at #84.๐Ÿ‘Though, the following week, it did fall twelve spots to #96. But the album still sold a lot of copies there.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Sparks Fly was also successful on the music charts in Austria, where it managed to peak inside the Top 50 of the albums chart, entering at #46.๐Ÿ‘It also spent one week on the German album charts, debuting and peaking at  #96.๐Ÿ‘ And on the Swiss album's chart, Sparks Fly peaked inside of the Top 40, debuting at #35.๐Ÿ‘

But as I also briefly mentioned before, despite the album and tour's success, Sparks Fly was still met with a generally mixed reception from critics.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ŽAs Stephen Thomas Erlewine who reviewed the album for AllMusic gave Sparks Fly two out of five stars with a negative review stating that, “Miranda winds up buried underneath the weight of production on Sparks Fly — it often comes across like a cross of Miley Cyrus and Kesha’s full-frontal assault. (Huh?)”๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿ‘ŽHe (Erlewine) also stated that "Sparks Fly is bedecked in modern electronic rhythms and icy hooks, yet the glassy surface sheen flies in the face of the natural charm Cosgrove displays on iCarly and its accompanying soundtrack.” A review in which I totally DISAGREE with.

However, Jeff Giles of Popdose gave Sparks Fly a more positive review, stating "...Sparks Fly is a perfectly bite-sized chunk of perfectly bite-sized pop - In other words, songs about boys and girls, written by men and women, and performed by some of the sharpest studio vets in the business."๐Ÿ‘ Greg Victor of Parcbench also gave Sparks Fly, as well as Miranda Cosgrove herself, a positive review, stating that "It is brilliantly produced and won’t let you down if you are looking for some fun, new, uncomplicated music."๐Ÿ‘He also commented on Miranda Cosgrove as an artist, saying "She is a fresh voice that stands out in an over-crowded field of pop princesses.”๐Ÿ‘ And the review ended with Greg Victor awarding Sparks Fly three out of four stars. Sparklingstar.net also gave Sparks Fly a positive review, stating that "Sparks Fly has that classic pop album sound and songs, if you are a fan of Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears you will be a fan of Miranda. One thing I must say is that her voice sounds great throughout the entire CD, and she took it to find songs that fit her voice."๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Commonsensemedia.org gave Sparks Fly a mixed review with three out of five stars, saying "Formulaic at best, painfully predictable at its worst, Sparks Fly could only be appealing to the youngest of ears, not jaded by hundreds of similarly sounding releases. Miranda Cosgrove does bring a unique sincerity to this bubblegum love-in (Huh?), and despite the forgettable accompanying pop instrumental, her message comes through loud and clear. With a dash of spunky attitude she saves the CD from completely drowning in a sea of sweetness." A review in which I mostly disagree with, because this album is not painfully predictable or formulaic, it's actually a stand-out and quite unique, and people of all ages can enjoy it. But, yes, I do agree that Miranda's unique sincerity and spunky attitude does make this album GREAT. Starletinc.com was also mixed in their review of the album, saying that, “This is a first attempt by Miranda as a recording artist and she did quite alright. It still lacks a little bit of identity, but that isn’t anything shocking for a sixteen year old, especially when they’re main trade is actress rather than recording artist [...] While it all isn’t anything special it’s still enjoyable enough to listen to." And the review ended with them giving Sparks Fly three out of five stars. Quite alright? This album is more than alright. It DOESN'T lack identity, and is VERY SPECIAL.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š

In their review of the album, Portrait Magazine stated Sparks Fly would target teenagers, saying, “The verdict on Miranda's musical effort is, like her album, a little confusing. I don't think she's quite at the point of being on mainstream radio; she's got a little bit of work to do before that. But her bubblegum tracks are good enough to be played on children's radio stations, like Radio Disney, for example. Her current sound, the mixture of club beats and the sugary sweet pop, will probably hit well with the younger end of her audience. I just don't know if anyone over the age of thirteen is going to want to listen to her album all that often. Tracks like “Disgusting” will probably land well with older teens, but when they can listen to its writer on the radio already, I don't see the need for them to buy this album.” Another review that I totally DISAGREE with. 'Cause Sparks Fly is NOT confusing at all, it's totally mainstream-worthy, not the typical bubblegum-pop you always hear, and it hits well with audiences of all ages. Like me, for instance. Someone who's in her 20's and still listening and enjoying this album.๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿซถ

TeenInk praised the lyrical content and friendly nature of the music in Sparks Fly, stating, "Any girl would love this album because it is upbeat and describes the way most girls feel when they are in love. Sparks Fly is a wonderful CD because it is upbeat, and has music that is very easy to relate to. Love may hurt and break your heart, but this album is sure to put a smile on your face." And they later went on to say, "The album Sparks Fly has a good musical beat and positive lyrics. The song BAM is fast-paced and is an easy song to relate to. [...] This song is saying that once you find the one person that you love everything else doesn't matter, because the only thing that's important is being with the one that you love."๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘AGREED.

Erin Clendaniel of Billboard also gave the album three out of five stars and said in her mixed review, "Full of saccharin-sweet pop riffs and head-bobbing beats that one would expect from a Nickelodeon TV actress, iCarly star, Miranda Cosgrove's debut album, Sparks Fly, delivers the total tween package. Production from the Matrix and Espionage, among others, enhances Cosgrove's pretty standard delivery, but some of her lyrics are strangely vague. Over an electro-pop melody on the song "Disgusting" (co-penned by Kesha), Cosgrove sings, 'It's disgusting how you change me from a bandit to a baby.' And the piano-based ballad ‘Hey You' briefly alludes to the Greek myth of Icarus and Daedalus, while 'Shakespeare' name-drops Jeff Buckley (who died in 1997 when Cosgrove was only 4- years-old). Elsewhere, paired with upbeat guitars and drum machines on the girl-power anthem ‘There Will Be Tears,' the singer happily belts out about being 'the one that got away.' Parents will likely tire of it quickly, but Sparks Fly will surely be stuck on repeat in minivans across the country. And to that review I say, well, my dad also enjoyed this album and it was definitely played on repeat in my family's car many of times.

So, despite all of those negative critics, I for one, LOVE this album.๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š Which I guess I’ll now go into a bit of my history with Sparks Fly, and how I became a fan it. Basically, I just remember someway, somehow getting the CD of Sparks Fly in 2010. A CD that I still have and definitely utilized for this post.๐Ÿ’ฟ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ˜Š Having said that, I don’t remember if I got the CD of this album as a late birthday gift at that time, or if I just bought it at the store one day when I was with my family, or what?๐Ÿค”But I just remember having the CD at that time, in 2010, and playing it on repeat all throughout the rest of that year. And I was 13-years-old at the time, so I was definitely the target demographic for this album. But I was also already a BIG FAN of Miranda Cosgrove, as I mentioned in my last post, because I watched all of the Nickelodeon shows and episodes that she was on. So, once she came out with this album, I just knew I had to own it. But again, I don’t know remember how I found out about this album before it was bought or given to me, and if I was gifted it or bought it myself with some money that I had. 'Cause this album came out a little bit over a month after my birthday that year, so i definitely didn’t get it on my birthday. But maybe it was a late birthday gift kind of thing? I also wasn’t earning my own money then, so I’m sure one of my parents gave me some money to be able to buy it. And it could have been bought one day that year when some of my family members and I went to our local grocery store, and I would always go straight to the DVDs and CDs section to see what new ones were released, and so maybe that’s when I saw this CD and had to buy it, because it was one that I didn’t have and from an artist that I actually knew. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure that whole store scenario is correct.

Not too long after this album came out my parents got divorced, and so I was dealing with a bunch of stuff in 2010. Let’s just say it was THE CRAZIEST, WILDEST, and just WORST year of my life.๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿ˜ข But that’s why this album holds such a special place in my heart and is very nostalgic to me, because it was one of those things that helped me get through that really hard time in my life. It was actually this album and Miley Cyrus’ Can’t Be Tamed album that were the most played albums for me in 2010. And are albums that I associate that time of my parents divorce with the most, because I listened to both of those albums non-stop that whole rest of the year. All throughout my parents divorce. And for no specific reason. It wasn't, like, intentional or anything. I guess, those were just the albums that I related to the most at the time and are the ones that made me feel good when I needed to feel some happiness. Those two albums were definitely the vibes of the time for me.

So, i definitely listened to this album THE MOST in 2010. And then I kind of moved on from it after that year. Well, not moved on, but i definitely took a break from listening to it for awhile after that, just because I had listened to it so much and whenever I would listen to any song from it it would bring back some bad memories of that time that I didn’t want to always think about. But of course, after some years later, I came back around to wanting to listen to this album again. And I started being able to separate it from that bad year of my life. Which is always much easier to do as you get older and as more time has passed. ‘Cause you start to forget a lot of those bad memories anyways. So, now whenever I listen to this album it definitely still brings back some of those bad memories of that time in my life, but it also brings back some great, special, fond memories as well. Such as the many memories of my sisters and I with our dad driving us around to whatever places we were going to during the summer of 2010 when it was his time to spend with us, and I would of course ask every time we were in the car for my CD of Sparks Fly to be put in the car CD player so we could listen to it. And so, we would listen to that CD on repeat many times during car rides to wherever we were going. I’ll never forget those days.๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ฟ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸฉทI remember my dad even LOVED a lot of the songs on this album then, and he still does. Just like my sisters and I do. That’s how good it is. And my dad didn’t like just any and every song from a teen pop star singer that my sisters and I would listen to CD’s of. So, if he liked it, then you know it’s good. 'Cause adults really did and still do enjoy this album. At least, I not only enjoyed this album when I was 13, but I even still enjoy listening to it now as an adult in my 20's. It really does stand the test of time.

Even though, this wasn’t my first time in a long time re-listening to this album for this post, as that would be last year when my younger sister wanted to make a video of hers and my older sister and I’s ranking of these songs, I was still actually really excited to re-listen to this album again and rank the songs from it for this post, because I'm always excited to go back and listen to it. And also just re-listening to it now that I’m even a bit older, I was curious to see if any of my thoughts and opinions of the songs had changed at all. Which I was a bit surprised to find out that some of my thoughts on a few of the songs on this album have definitely changed a little. But, don’t get me wrong, because I still LOVE all of the songs on this album (Except for maybe one, but we’ll get to that.). Just a couple of songs that used to be my MOST FAVORITES from this album ranked a bit lower than I initially thought they would have. And even a bit differently, I think, from when I ranked them just last year. So, that was interesting.

When I decided to start this little series of blog posts where I talk about every album/EP from my favorite Disney (and a few non-Disney) artists, I knew Miranda Cosgrove’s discography would most certainly have to be spotlighted on here, because with Sparks Fly specifically, it's an album that I grew up with and still LOVE to this day, and I really do think it’s one of the BEST teen albums of my generation. Just one of the BEST albums EVER in general. In fact, I actually planned on creating and posting about this album on the blog last year, but some other things came up. So I’m just really excited to finally get to talk about this album here with you all now, and share my favorite songs from the album and everything, because it’s been a long time coming. But also, me finally getting to post about this album now, this year, worked out pretty perfectly since today marks 16 YEARS since its release. Which is pretty crazy. Can you believe it? I know I can’t.๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿคฏ But I’m ready to celebrate it.๐Ÿฅณ So, hey you! What are you waiting for? This isn’t a daydream, it’s not disgusting, and there will not be tears, but maybe a brand new you after we get into A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Miranda Cosgrove’s Sparks Fly Album (in honor of its 16th Anniversary)!๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฟ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š✨ Okay, yeah, I know. Some of that doesn't make sense, but I tried.๐Ÿ˜Š

Just a brief note before we begin: As I mentioned before, the original version of this album, the only version I knew about for the longest time, only consisted of EIGHT songs, but I couldn’t not talk about the other FIVE songs that were included on the deluxe version I found out about way later. So this ranking does include ALL 13 songs from Sparks Fly. Now, for real this time, let’s get into A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Miranda Cosgrove’s Sparks Fly Album (in honor of its 16th Anniversary)! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿป๐ŸŽค๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฟ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š✨

#13 "charlie"

This is a song that I definitely wasn’t aware of back in 2010 when I got the CD of this album. I actually didn’t know this song even existed until just a few years ago. And I listened to it for the first time last year. So, I don’t have a lot of nostalgia when it comes to this song. Having said that, I knew from ranking these songs last year for my sisters video, that I was going to feel the same way I did then about this song. It’s just not great, in my opinion. I don’t love the beat. Parts of it are okay, but it's just not fully good. I also just strongly dislike most songs that use a name of a person, and this is that kind of song. ‘Cause who’s Charlie? I can’t sing this song or relate to this song, because I don’t know who this person is. And all this song does is repeat his name over and over. It’s just hard to relate to a song like this when you actually put a name of the person in the song. Someone only she knows. And you can't just change the name to some other name you know, because it just doesn't work . I mean, parts of this song are cute. Her having a crush on this guy named Charlie and expressing that and then certain aspects of the beat are fine. But, yeah, this is definitely my least favorite song from this album. Which I wasn’t surprised by at all. It’s not the worst song I’ve ever heard, but again, i mostly just don’t like it because of the whole name thing. I mean, this song could have probably been better, and ranked a bit higher on this list, if it was without the specific name given.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS: the bridge

#12 "adored"

This is another song that I’m not as familiar with like I am with a lot of the others on this list. As I just recently, last year, listened to this song for the first time ever (to my recollection, anyway). So, it’s one of the few songs on this list that doesn’t hold any nostalgia for me. Which is kind of one reason why I ranked it lower. But besides that, I love the beat of this song, but I just don’t like the whole message about her just wanting to be adored by this person. ‘Cause if she has to ask for such a thing from this person, and they already just don’t give it to her willingly, that’s a big RED FLAG.๐ŸšฉI also specifically don’t love the part when she sings, “For my own sake, it don't matter if I break / You're gonna be adored by me”. So majority of the lyrics of this song really hurt it’s standing on this ranking. But again, the beat, I love. And I would still listen to this song again. It’s just not my favorite from this album. But definitely worth a listen-to at least once.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*“But let's throw ourselves in and get soaking wet / Don't just slip our toes in, not yet”

*“It's not enough for you simply to say it / Instead of telling me words, let me know / That your positively mine / And I'm positively yours for sure (For sure)”

*all of verse 2

#11 "brand new you"

If I were just ranking the beats of these songs then this one would definitely rank a bit higher on this list. The only main reason why I ranked this song lower on this list is because I don’t like the whole found a brand new you aspect of it. 'Cause if this person is so toxic, why would she want somebody who’s exactly like him? Or who looks exactly like him? I mean, I know she does say at one point, the same him but someone who treats her better (than her ex). But still? So, I don’t know, but this song is just a bit confusing to me. Maybe I’m reading into it wrong. Again, this still isn’t a bad song by any means, I just don’t love the whole message of it. And there’s much better other confident breakup anthems on this album that I’ll be mentioning.

This is also another song that wasn’t on the original CD release. So it’s not as nostalgic to me like some of the other songs on this list are. In fact, I just listened to this whole song just last year for the first time. But I’m trying not to just rank these songs just based on nostalgia, so i definitely would have ranked this song higher if I liked the meaning and lyrics, but I don’t. So that’s why it ranks here at #11. I mean, it makes sense why it wasn’t included on the original release of this album. Don’t get me wrong, though, because I still wouldn’t mind listening to this song again. Just for the sake of this post, the reasons above are why this song doesn’t rank any higher for me. Again, I love the whole moving on from a toxic relationship and reclaiming your self-worth, but finding just a brand new version of that person isn’t the right way to go. 'Cause you should find the completely opposite of that type of person that mistreated you. But this song is still relatable when it comes to most of the lyrics. Oh, and I don’t love the little beat change this song does right before she sings the bridge. This song is very catchy, though. And it definitely got stuck in my head after listening to it.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS: Literally, I love EVERY lyric, except every time she says the words “brand new you”.

#10 "hey you"

This is another very sweet song. The beat of this song definitely gives those daydream-like feelings, which is GREAT, but it also kind of puts you in a daydream. At least, for me, whenever I listen to this song, it does make me want to go to sleep. ‘Cause it’s like any great lullaby. This song is the slowest on the album, which is why it ranks lower for me. I do remember this also being the least played song off this album for me when I was thirteen. And again, mostly just because it is very slow. But I still like it. Honestly, I probably could have even ranked this song a bit lower due to its pacing being slow, but this is one of the songs that was included on the CD I had in 2010, so it is VERY NOSTALGIC to me. I do LOVE the message of this song, as it’s all about loving yourself and encouraging that in others as well. So it is very relatable, but that’s also why I ranked this song lower, because it is a bit more of a downer. I mean, although it’s a good reminder, I don’t need that reminder every day. In other words, I appreciate this song for the message, but it’s not one that I would care to play all the time, just because it is a bit more of a downer. But yes, I’m sure everyone can relate to this song. Especially girls/women. Which is GREAT.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*“You always see the beauty in a passing cloud / You’re the one who fixes me when I’m down”

*“You could find one diamond in a mine / But you’re the one who’s shinin’ for miles around”

*the whole chorus

*“If you fly like lcarus to the edge / I could be there talkin’ you back, don’t forget / But you don’t go there, do you?”

*“And when the night is long / Do you wake up hearin’ a voice inside / Callin’ out for you, “Oh, please”?”

*the whole bridge

*“I see you, hey you / What you’re gonna do?”

#9 "what are you waiting for?"

Okay, this is another song that was on some other version of this album that I didn’t know about, so I’m not as familiar with this song as I am with the original eight songs from the original release of Sparks Fly. But this is a pretty great song. Immediately when I first listened to this song, it sounded like that song from The Princess Diaries. Does anyone else get that when they hear this song? So, every time I now listen to this song I just always think of that movie, because this song definitely gives those same vibes as that other song. The beat of this song is very beautiful. And just the song as a whole is very romantic and beautiful. I can definitely picture this song being in some romance movie, or played during a romantic scene in a TV show. It definitely sounds like a wedding song, too. I will say, I love the beat of this song more during the chorus, though. 'Cause then the beat does slow down during the verses, and it’s not as great. I also don’t love the beat change during the bridge part either. And then I also ranked this song lower on this list, just having to be picky, because she’s just singing about waiting for this person to move past the friend stage to something more before time runs out. Which, is a bit of a red flag. 'Cause again, if this person is really in love with you and wants to move past the friend stage, you shouldn’t have to ask them. That’s not a good sign. But then I can see how maybe in some cases like this one, the other person is just more shy, and so she’s giving the other person the okay to make the move. Which is good. So, I just don't fully love this song for those reasons. But this song definitely does give off that out-of-time feeling perfectly. Again, I don’t LOVE this song, nor is it one of my most favorites from this album, but I would still listen to it again. It's not a bad song.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS: chorus ; “If you wanna make this right / Break the ice, don't think twice”

#8 "beautiful mess"

This is another song that I’m not as familiar with like I am with a lot of the other songs from this album, because it wasn’t on the original CD I grew up with. But this is the best song out of the bonus tracks that weren’t included on the original album release. However, this song still ranks lower for me because the beat is a little all over the place. I love bits of it, but what I like of it kind of goes in and out. I don’t really know how to explain it. I also don’t know who is singing with Miranda in this song in the background. Why couldn’t the background vocals have just been Miranda’s? So, the other vocals in this song I just feel aren’t really needed. I pretty much just ranked this song above the others above because the lyrics and meaning are better. As it’s all about a girl who got her heart broken by a guy she never thought would play her like a game, and her expressing her feelings about that. Very relatable and realistic. So with the great lyrics and meaning and the beat still being okay, but not great, that’s why this song earned its spot here at #8. What can I say? It’s a beautiful mess, this song.๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜Š

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS: ALL OF THEM

#7 "daydream"

Now that I just learned that this song was co-written by Avril Lavigne I definitely get those vibes from this song. I always knew it sounded like something I had heard before, and that’s definitely it. Some Avril Lavigne song that I’ve listened to before. I actually don’t love the beat of this song, though. It's just okay. It definitely can be a bit annoying at times. Well, maybe I should say, monotonous. I mostly just ranked this song above the others above, because lyrically and meaning-wise, it’s just a bit better than those other songs. Also, because this is one of the songs that I grew up with. As it was definitely on the CD of this album that I bought when I was thirteen. So, it’s more NOSTALGIC to me than most of the other songs above in that way. Although this song came out in 2010, it actually sounds like a song from the early 2000s that would also be in some 2000s movie. I still did rank this song lower than a lot of the other songs above, because it’s just about a guy being her daydream. But she’s crushing on a guy who is bad news. It’s a fierce, fantasy-driven infatuation where she feels entirely consumed by her feelings. So I don’t love every lyric in this song, but it is relatable and realistic, because I’m sure a lot of people can relate to having such a one-sided crush situation.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*“I could've been the one you noticed / I could've been all over you / I could've been like all the others / Is that what I'm supposed to do? / It would've been really stupid /If I would've went out with you / To give you everything you wanted”

*the whole pre-chorus

*the chorus

*“You're my daydream / (And you know, and you know, and you know, and you know) / You're making me insane /You're my daydream / (And you know, and you know, and you know, and you know) /You're doing it again”

#6 "disgusting"

I do love the whole beat and vibes of this song. It’s definitely one of the more mellow songs from the album, but that’s what makes it great. I feel like younger me would have also ranked this song exactly where it is now on this ranking. I mostly just ranked this song a bit lower now, just because it is more slower than the songs I've already mentioned above. And just to be really picky in order to rank all of these GREAT songs, what this song is about is also why I ranked it a bit lower. As this song is basically about being overwhelmingly in love with someone who is toxic, which is not great, but I understand the feeling and where she’s coming from. And this song is very relatable I’m sure to a lot of people. As it doesn’t even have to just be about a bf/gf relationship, but any kind of relationship. I know I can definitely relate this song to some people I know. I am also not too keen on the repeated lyric when she sings, “Gotta walk my talk, my fame”. Just sounds a little conceited. Which, from interviews and things that I've seen with Miranda, I can tell that she isn’t that kind of person at all. But, I just don’t love that lyric in this song. But again, that’s just me having to find something to dislike about this song in order to rank it properly amongst all the other great songs from this album. Overall, the beat of this song is UNIQUE and GREAT. And some of the lyrics in this song are still GENIUS. The most ICONIC lyric in this song, and from any song in general, being when she sings, “It’s disgusting, how you changed me / From a bandit to a baby.” Oh, and I love the unique beat change of the bridge and how she sings that. That’s a great part of the song that actually works, and it’s very fun to sing, as well. The vibes of this song also just always make me feel VERY NOSTALGIC of the time that this album came out.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*“My heart booms at the speed of light / But the exit sign’s always on my mind, always in my sight”

*“It’s disgusting, how I love you / I can’t take it, I should hate you”

*“It’s disgusting, how you changed me / From a bandit to a baby / Think I might gotta change my name /  If I’m gonna walk this walk of shame”

*all of verse 2

*the whole bridge

#5 "shakespeare"

Okay, this song I definitely used to LOVE way more when I was a teen. Don’t get me wrong, “Shakespeare” is still a GREAT song, but i definitely feel like I would have ranked this song a bit higher when I was younger. I still do LOVE the beat of this song. It really is such a beautiful song, and SO CATCHY. And I’ve always felt like this song is HIGHLY UNDERRATED. Maybe it’s not, but I don’t hear about it enough. This is definitely one of those songs I just can’t ever get out of my head after playing it just once. And that is a good thing, because I do love it. I just had to rank it a bit lower for this post because, being picky, I don’t know who Jeff Buckley is? Is he a good guy? And whoever she’s talking about in this song, aren’t they moving a bit too fast in their relationship? I mean, she first meets him on a train and then he’s walking her home? What’s the timeframe? I need to know.๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜ŠSo, maybe not the best message for listeners when it comes to that.

But, with most of the other lyrics there is that great message about the importance of getting to know someone first before just going all in with them. I also think maybe she’s giving this guy too much credit and being maybe too mushy gushy in love, as she literally calls him magical just for stopping and staring at her, and incredible for him just walking her home. Again, I get it, but that’s just me being picky in order to rank this song. I don’t love that. This song is very sweet and romantic, though, and it does leave you feeling all happy and good and warm inside. It's also very relatable, too. As it's about the excitement of a new crush and the desire to measure your compatibility with them. I also LOVE a good ballad, and this is just that, as well. Besides the chorus, I also just love, love, LOVE the bridge of this song. And I really also LOVE that this song starts with her asking her crush what he likes and then at the end it flips to her saying the things she likes, which are the things that she hopes that he likes too. GENIUS. I seriously hate having to rank this song here at #5, because it is REALLY GOOD, but I do love the songs I'll be mentioning next a bit more, for other reasons.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*“I saw you there, so beautiful / You stopped and stared, so magical”

*“Do you like kissin’ when it’s rainin’? / Makin’ faces in the station?”

*"You walk me home, so wonderful / It starts to snow, it’s incredible”

*“Show me the place where you come from / And the places you dream of / I wanna know everything you are / But before we get that far / What do you like?”

#4 "there will be tears"

This song and the next two that I’ll be mentioning were definitely THE HARDEST songs to rank from this album because they’re really ALL equally GREAT. So, just know that even though this song is #4 on this list, that doesn’t take away from how TRULY GREAT it is. It’s literally one of the ULTIMATE, GIRL-POWER breakup anthems. So, this song not only ranked higher on this list for that reason, but also because it’s one of the more upbeat, high-energy songs from this whole album, it’s SO RELATABLE (for many situations not just when it comes to a bf/gf breakup), the lyrics are GREAT and the message is GREAT. And this has just always been one of the more stand-out songs from Sparks Fly to me, since I was thirteen.

Just having to be very, very picky in order to rank all of these great songs, I didn’t rank this song higher, because it is kind of a lot of screaming that sometimes I’m not in the mood for. And, although I appreciate the positivity and her outlook after being broke up with, I think anyone would be sad if they just got left or broken up with. But again, I get it. She’s trying to put on a brave face and act like she doesn’t care, but you should care if that relationship was really important to you. So, you should be the one crying also. Or even if you are the only one crying. The person who did the breaking up doesn’t care at all, obviously, and that’s the problem. So, I don’t know. That’s the only way I could justify why I couldn’t rank this song any higher than it already is. ‘Cause maybe the lyrics could have been a bit differently. But again, I still LOVE this song. TRULY. And there is still a great, relatable message in this song. It’s also another one of those songs that just gets better and better as it goes on. I also LOVE the bridge. And like I said before, this song is very RELATABLE. And it doesn’t just have to relate to a bf/gf breakup. At least, I can definitely relate this song to many situations in my life. This song is also SO VERY CATCHY. It’ll get stuck in your head after the first listen, and it won’t leave your head for a long time after. At least, that's what happened to me after my first re-listen of this song recently.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*the whole 1st verse

*the chorus

*2nd verse

*“You don't know what you got 'til it goes away, goes away, baby / Anything that you've lost, you're the one to blame, one to blame, so save it”

#3 "oh oh"

This is one of the other songs that I had a REALLY HARD time deciding where to rank. But I’m not surprised at all where this song landed on this list, because I have always favored this song over all the other songs I mentioned previously. As I mentioned before, I have such fond special memories of listening to this album multiple times during drives with my family in the car when I was thirteen, and I remember us just always laughing at this song because of the “Oh, Ohs”. I mean, they’re GREAT. But SO FUNNY and RANDOM. And I’ll definitely never forget the first time I played this song in the car and the first time we heard the “Oh, Oh” part of this song. We just found it random and funny right from the start. And it still is very random and funny. But it definitely works for this song. I love something that can make me laugh and this song definitely does just that. But it's also pretty deep and has a great message. I also LOVE the beat of this song.

This song is unlike any other song I’ve ever heard before. And I mean that in a good way. If it wasn’t for the “Oh, Ohs” I probably wouldn’t rank this song as high, but the “Oh, Ohs” definitely add something special and funny to this song. It makes it stand-out for sure and definitely makes it UNFORGETTABLE. At least I’ve never forgotten it all these years later, and probably never will. I ranked this song above the previous song I mentioned because, in my opinion, this is the better confident breakup anthem. I was also really questioning whether or not to rank this song even above "BAM", but I didn’t, just because sometimes the “Oh, Ohs” can be a bit annoying. I’m not always in the mood to hear that part of the song. And it's A LOT of the song. And I do just hope it’s not some older guy doing that part of the song, because then I would rank this song much lower because that would be weird and problematic. I actually think I might have ranked this song lower last year for my sister's video for that reason actually. Although, since I didn't look up who is actually doing the "Oh, Ohs" in this song, that's why it's ranked higher than I might have had it last year. But this was definitely in my TOP 3 favorite songs played from this album when I was thirteen, too. So it’s no surprise that it’s still in my TOP 3 favorite songs from this album now. Although, I definitely didn’t understand what the “Oh, Ohs” even meant when I was younger listening to this song. It wasn’t until last year when I reread all the lyrics that they finally made sense to me and I knew what it all meant. Whereas, before, I just thought they were there to be funny, not actually there to continue to spell out something.

Again, this song is very nostalgic, it makes me laugh, lyrically it’s unique, and it’s very catchy and fun to sing. It also starts with a BANG from the very beginning and continues that way 'til the end. At first I wasn’t sure about the lyric when she sings, “And I look so hot, the boys forgot” because it is quite conceited, but it works for this song and situation, because she should feel that confident. And some of the other lyrics seem to suggest that she's now going out looking for trouble with another guy, but then she doesn't want the trouble? I don't know, but if that's the case, then I don't love that either. And I also wasn’t so sure about the lyric when she sings, “I can pick up the phone and get me another you / I'll bet he'll know just what to do”, because at first I was confused thinking she was saying she’ll just get herself another guy that’s just like the guy who broke up with her. A toxic guy. But I don’t think that’s what she meant by that? I don’t know. If she did, then that’s not right, but it doesn’t matter anyways because the rest of this song is still too good.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS: ALL OF THEM

#2 "BAM"

This has always been my second favorite song from Sparks Fly. In other words, when it comes to this album, it was definitely this song, the previous song I mentioned, and the next song that I'll be mentioning that were played on repeat the most for me in 2010. And obviously, I still think "BAM" is one of the BEST songs from the album. I LOVE the beat, lyrics and meaning of this song. It’s SO UNIQUE, even more-so when it came out at the time that it did. This song gets you hooked right from the very beginning by just the beat. It’s one of those songs that just builds and builds and gets even better as it goes along. It’s so high-energy and just fun to sing. Especially, the “BAM!” part each time.

This song is ICONIC and just SO GREAT. It truly never gets old. And it’s one of those great pick-me-up songs. I mean, this whole album is, but this song especially. I will say, though, there is a couple of questionable lyrics when it comes to the bridge. As she sings that if she had to she would walk a million miles to find his smile and if he took a trip to Costa Rica and told her to meet him she would. I understand her commitment and willingness to go to any length for the person she loves, as long as she knows him well and trusts him. ‘Cause don’t just go across the country for anyone. Especially someone you just probably met. And hopefully she’s getting that same commitment and willingness back from him. But again, those few lyrics don’t take away from how truly GREAT the rest of this song is.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
*“You surprised me (Oh), hypnotized me (Yeah, yeah) / Found my weakness (Found my weakness) / Then you creeped in (Creeped in) / Took my heart then (Bam, yeah) / Oh, you started to make my whole world just explode (Bam, bam)”

*all of verse 1

*the pre-chorus

*and all of verse 2

#1 "kissin u"

I mean, why would I pick any other song but this one as my #1 favorite? This song is FOREVER ICONIC. I knew before even starting this album re-listen that this song would be my #1 favorite, and of course I never changed my mind once about it. This song was definitely the MOST PLAYED song from this album for me in 2010. I have such fond, SPECIAL memories of listening to this song as a teen and watching the ICONIC music video. I remember loving the music video SO MUCH when it first came out that one time when I watched it I literally used my my little red slide -up phone that I had at the time and recorded me playing the music video on YouTube on my family’s computer screen just so that I could have it on my phone to replay anytime. Which I could have just watched it on YouTube anytime I wanted, but yeah, that’s a thing I did.๐Ÿ˜‚ And I still have that old, little red phone of mine with that video still on it, too.๐Ÿ˜ŠAlso, speaking of the music video for this song, I’ve always LOVED every outfit that Miranda wears in that video and the whole concept and everything is just SO GREAT. It goes perfectly with the song, too. Back to the song itself, this song never gets old. It’s VERY NOSTALGIC. And it really does greatly capture that exhilarating feeling of falling in love with someone. Literally, this is not only THE BEST song from this album, but it’s also just one of the BEST songs EVER. There’s literally nothing I dislike about this song. The lyrics of this song are GENIUS. And I love the bridge when the beat changes a bit, too. Just EVERYTHING about this song is AMAZING.

FAV/STAND-OUT LYRICS:
"Sparks fly, it’s like electricity / I might die, when I forget how to breathe”

*“Cause when I'm kissin' you, my senses come alive / Almost like the puzzle piece I've been tryna find”

*“Past loves, they never got very far / Walls up, make sure I guarded my heart / And I promised I wouldn't do this / 'Til I knew it was right for me”

Well, that concludes A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Miranda Cosgrove’s Sparks Fly Album (in honor of its 16th Anniversary! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฟ๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’šI really enjoyed getting to go back and listen to this album once again. Especially after first discovering, not that long ago, the other FIVE songs that were included on the deluxe edition of this album that I didn’t even know existed for a very long time. And, although I can see why a few of those bonus tracks were left off of the original release of Sparks Fly, I still enjoyed my time listening to most of them again, after just listening to them all the way through for the first time last year. ‘Cause it just made for a longer album listening party, and for this album, that’s a huge plus. The more songs the better. But even just the original EIGHT songs made for a GREAT album.

Having said that, the songs on this album were EXTREMELY HARD to rank because they’re really all SO GOOD. Okay, there’s maybe a couple that aren’t so great, but there’s really no terrible song on this album. Even my least favorite song from this album, "Charlie", isn't the worst song I've ever heard. More specifically, I just had the toughest, most stressful time trying to rank the songs I put for #2, #3 and #4. 'Cause those three songs really are all EQUALLY GREAT. I just love the vibes of each song, and this album as a whole. Always have and more-than-likely always will. It was very, VERY nostalgic and kind of emotional going back to relisten to all of these songs, but mostly just very fun. And I already want to go back and re-listen to them all again. But I have to move on to rank the songs from Miranda Cosgrove's next next album. Though, again, this is definitely not the last time I’ll be listening to Sparks Fly. ‘Cause it’s ICONIC for a reason.

Truly, this album with or without the FIVE other songs is GREAT. It never gets old. And it never fails to bring me right back to those 2010 days. Again, I just LOVE the vibes of this album, and I still just wish this album was even longer. But for what this album is, it’s truly AMAZING. The songs, the artwork itself, just EVERYTHING about it. So, huge props to Miranda Cosgrove for creating this ICONIC album. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ†๐ŸซถIt’s not only the BEST of her discography, but also one of the BEST albums of all time, and obviously a must-listen to anyone who hasn’t ever heard it. Although, if you’ve made it this far into this post, then you more-than-likely have taken the time to listen to every song from Sparks Fly. And what do you think? It’s SO UNDERRATED isn’t it? Seriously, why do I feel that this album didn’t get all the HYPE it deserved? And Miranda Cosgrove herself, because she's a GREAT singer. Well, again, that’s why I wanted to create this post to shine a spotlight on all of that. To at least share all of my LOVE and APPRECIATION for this ICONIC album that should never not be talked about in all the best ways. And, although this is certainly Miranda Cosgrove’s BEST album that she ever released, there’s still an UNFORGETTABLE one to talk about from her discography. Let me just say, it’s definitely more...HIGH MAINTENANCE.๐Ÿ˜‰So, until tomorrow, make sure that you hit that follow button to get notified when my next post goes up, comment down below what your favorite song is from Sparks Fly, and come Back to Disney soon for more GREAT, FUN, NOSTALGIC music from Miranda Cosgrove! Oh, and once again, HAPPY 16 YEARS TO SPARKS FLY!!! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป๐Ÿค๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฟ✌๐Ÿป
