Welcome Back to Disney!๐๐๐I hope you enjoyed my last post on A Definitive Ranking of Every Song from Selena Gomez & The Scene’s When the Sun Goes Down Album, because today we’re continuing with Selena Gomez’s Disney discography, and talking all about her FIRST debut solo album, the ICONIC, NOSTALGIC, and TRULY UNFORGETTABLE, Stars Dance.๐ถ๐ฟ✷ Of course, there was no better time to post this than on Selena’s birthday, which is TODAY! So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SELENA!!๐๐๐ฅณNow, let’s get into it!๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ค๐ฉถ
Like I briefly mentioned before, Stars Dance is the debut solo album by Selena Gomez, that was released on July 19, 2013 by Hollywood Records.๐ถ๐ฟ๐However, Selena began planning for this album in 2012, at which time she announced that her band Selena Gomez & The Scene would be taking an indefinite hiatus, and she continued working on it into 2013. So, from October 2012 to March 2013 was when this album was recorded. Stars Dance is an EDM and electro-pop album, incorporating elements of dubstep, disco, techno, electro house, and worldbeat. Selena worked with producers such as Rock Mafia and The Cataracs on this album, as well.
Upon its release, the album received generally mixed reviews from music critics, many of whom complimented Selena’s maturing image and the album’s content both vocally and lyrically.๐But, they criticized the electronic-heavy production style.๐However, Stars Dance marked Selena’s FIRST album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200.๐The album also sold 97,000 copies in its first week of release in the U.S., making it her highest-selling debut up to that point.๐This was later surpassed by its successor, Revival (2015). Which sold 117,000 units in its first week. Stars Dance became Selena’s fourth TOP 20 entry in the U.K., peaking at #14.๐ Elsewhere, the album also topped the charts in Mexico, Canada, Norway, China, and Taiwan.๐๐๐๐๐ Stars Dance had sold an estimated over 410,000 copies in the U.S., as of 2017, as well.๐
Speaking of chart-topping successes, the lead single of Stars Dance, “Come & Get It” featured heavy electronic and worldbeat themes, and became Selena’s FIRST TOP 10 entry in the U.S. .๐It also entered the TOP 10 in countries such as the U.K. , Canada, and Ireland, among others.๐๐๐ “Come & Get It” was also successful on pop radio, reaching #2 on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart.๐ And, YES, I remember “Come & Get It” being played on the radio SO MUCH back in 2013, but I wasn't complaining.๐“Slow Down, which was the second single, failed to match the success of its predecessor. Although it did peak inside the TOP 30 in the U.S. .๐“Slow Down” was met with success on pop radio, reaching the TOP 10 on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart.๐ And Selena promoted Stars Dance through a number of high-profile performances. Such as the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. Selena also embarked on the Stars Dance Tour in 2013 to further promote the album's release.
As mentioned in my previous post, Selena Gomez & The Scene’s 2011 third studio album, When the Sun Goes Down, was musically rooted in electro-pop and dance-pop, similar to the group’s 2010 second album, A Year Without Rain. Although reviews from contemporary music critics were mixed, the album was still a commercial success. Selena announced in January 2012 that she would be putting her music career on hold to focus on her acting career, and that the band would be taking a hiatus. As she was quoted once saying, “My band and I are going our separate ways for a while. This year is all about films and acting and I want my band to play music wherever with whoever. We will be back but, it will be a good while”.๐However, despite her earlier statements, Selena first confirmed in October 2012 that work had begun on an upcoming album, and she later said it would be her solo debut album, rather than Selena Gomez & The Scene’s fourth album. In March, Selena announced that the lead single would be released the following month, and that the album would follow that summer. Selena also revealed plans of her FIRST world tour, known as the Stars Dance Tour, on April 15, 2013. And on June 3, 2013, Selena officially confirmed that the album would be titled Stars Dance. She also revealed the album’s track listing and cover art.
On her return to music, Selena at the time stated, “I miss it. I want to be able to write about things I’ve never talked about before and tell a story with this album, because I’ve never actually had time to go in and do that.” For Stars Dance, Selena made it with The Cataracs production team, as well as with the Norwegian Stargate. She (Selena) also worked with Rock Mafia on numerous tracks from this album, having previously worked with them on previous singles she did with The Scene. For this album, Selena attempted to have more creative control over her music. As she stated at the time, “It’s definitely the hardest I have ever worked on a record, that’s for sure. I wanted to have more creative control over the album’s direction.” Even Jason Evigan, who worked with Selena on Stars Dance said, “She’s not a little girl anymore. She wants to be like that and be respected like the great pop artists out there […] And I think she is. I think this album is really gonna blossom her into a new realm of electronic pop dance artist.”
Prior to the album’s release, Selena announced that she would be taking a musical hiatus after Stars Dance. Commenting at the time, “I’ve been saying that I worked really hard on this record and I feel like it might be my last one for a while […] I definitely love acting and I love film and I don’t feel like I’ve done enough of that.” After the album’s announcement, numerous sources began claiming that majority of Stars Dance was written about Selena’s relationship with Justin Bieber. Following the release of “Come & Get It”, rumors continued to rise in popularity, and prompted Selena to confirm that the song was NOT about Justin Bieber. However, Selena later said, that the song “Love Will Remember” IS about her relationship with Justin Bieber. Selena also revealed that “Love Will Remember” was “the most personal track on the record”, and added, “I think it’s a sweet way of releasing it. It’s not an aggressive approach to what people are probably expecting.” “Birthday” was actually the FIRST song recorded for Stars Dance. Selena also listed “Forget Forever” as one of her favorite tracks on Stars Dance saying, “It’s a really beautiful song. It has meaning behind it and it was a really special time in the studio. I got to be with the writers and just enjoy being in that moment. That was a really fun emotional song for me to sing but then I just kind of wanted to dance after I released it because it felt like I got to release this feeling that I had and it’s a beautiful song.” Selena later spoke of “Forget Forever” by stating “It’s forgetting all the troubles, about the past, just enjoying everything else.”
Fun fact, that I didn’t even know until now when researching a little bit about this album, but apparently Jennifer Lopez wanted to record the song “Save the Day” for her 2013 album, but failed to get it from Selena.๐ฎWhich is very interesting. I mean “Save the Day” does give off some Jennifer Lopez vibes, but I have also always gotten Shakira vibes whenever I listen to that song, too. “Come & Get It” was also initially recorded by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna for her sixth studio album, Talk Talk Talk (2011). However, she (Rihanna) decided against using the song.
Musically, this album is rooted stylistically in pop and EDM. This later specifically showcased as electropop, while also containing strong elements of dubstep, disco, techno, and worldbeat. Jocelyn Vena of MTV News described the music on this album as “dance-song-heavy” dubstep, that contains “wobbly synths, loopy vocals, fist-pumping beats and crunchy breakdowns”. Stars Dance contains a highly diverse musical composition, as highlighted by Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian as “darting efficiently from EDM to Bollywood”. The majority of Stars Dance contains dubstep breakdowns, requisite stabs of synths, and according to Jim Farber of New York Daily News, “features a frisson of s*x previously absent from this good-girl singer’s work.” (Okay.) Jason Evigan said of the album’s musical style, “She’s got some really cool like ethnic influence, kind of tribally dance drums and stuff like that”, stating that it was similar to music by Jennifer Lopez.” Which I agree. But again, I think there is also some Shakira influence in this album as well. August Brown of the Los Angeles Times called the album a “sassy” pop-EDM album, noting its composition included “oxygen-sucking” sub-bass, trap snares. Brown also noted the influence of Spring Breakers on Stars Dance, saying that Selena wasn’t ready to leave the “neon-splattered emotional h*llscape of Spring Breakers just yet.” (Weird. Why is some old guy saying such things? Gross.) He also went further on to say: “Stars Dance is exactly the kind of album one makes in 2013 if you want to keep the pop sugar of the Disney tween cabal but mix in some broken glass and a club bathroom nosebleed. Its productions are rooted in today’s pop-EDM default mode, but as that stuff goes, ‘Slow Down’ is pretty capable, and the bhangra-appropriating ‘Come & Get It’ is guilelessly silly enough to work.” Again, I don’t know what this guy is talking about but he’s wrong on every level. SO WEIRD.
Anyway, the title track of Stars Dance was once described by Selena as being “kind of sensual”, while “Like a Champion” is said to feature Jamaican and reggae influences. Selena also once stated, when talking about the song “Save the Day”, “Do you ever have moments where you don’t ever want them to end? I’ve had those moments. It’s about saving those moments and never wanting it to go away.” (YES, so relatable.๐) “Write Your Name” is about the feeling of falling in love. Selena also once described "B.E.A.T." by saying, “The song is cool and the lyrics are great, but it was more, ‘I can’t wait to perform this song onstage because I love the way I feel when I hear this song.’ It’s just dope.” Later she (Selena) stated that “Undercover” was her favorite song on Stars Dance. Commenting, “I’ve never had the confidence to do different licks and melody changes. I messed up a lot [while recording] that one.” “Come & Get It”, the lead single from Stars Dance, has been described as featuring “Bollywood” and tribal music influences. Which you can definitely hear when listening to the song and see when watching the music video.
On-air personality Peter Dee noted that “Come & Get It” featured various electropop elements. While “Slow Down” is noted as featuring various dubstep influences, and the song’s lyrics speak of taking a relationship slowly rather than rushing into things. Selena listed Britney Spears and Janet Jackson as some of the album’s biggest influences, and she even later cited Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, and Skrillex as major influences on the album as well. Selena listed dubstep producer Skrillex as an influence to Stars Dance, as he previously worked on the soundtrack for Selena’s 2012 film Spring Breakers. Selena later stated, “Doing Spring Breakers was really fun, because Skrillex and Cliff Martinez did the soundtrack, and [Skrillex] kind of inspired me with a baby dubstep, because I have a few songs that have that.” Selena also mentioned electropop singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding during an interview with Teen Vogue, while she described the sound of the record, stating, “they are all really fun, pop songs - a little Ellie Goulding-ish, a little island-y feel. It’s a really fun pop record.” Jim Farber of New York Daily News noted influences of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Janet Jackson. Although he went on to say, “Gomez’s writer and producers have aped stars’ tricks gamely enough to create a pretty good time. It helps that Gomez boasts a far richer voice than her idols, Britney, J Lo, and Janet." Again, what he said, not me.๐
Stars Dance opens with “Birthday”, an electropop song which contains sparse drums, trap snares, and vocal chants, and has been described by Julia Rubin of Headlines and Global News as a “candy-coated, clap-happy club anthem with plenty of girl power and s*x appeal, much like a bubblegum version of Rihanna’s “Cockiness (Love It)”.” “Slow Down” is a high-octane, up-tempo dance-pop, and EDM song, that has been described as a “wobbly club thumper” by Robert Copsey of Digital Spy. It features a dubstep chorus, funk guitars, a four on the floor beat, and a spoken word outro. Lyrically, “Slow Down” speaks of, as the title suggests, “slowing down the song” so the party doesn’t end.
The album’s title track, “Stars Dance”, is a “breathy and sultry” dubstep song that contains an orchestral-dubstep beat. According to Julia Rubin, “Gomez’s soft voice takes center stage over sexy synth-beats, icy choruses, and wallowing melodies.” The song has also received comparisons to the works of Britney Spears. “Like a Champion” is a dancehall song, with influences of funk, soca music and reggae, and features Selena singing the song in a Bajan accent. As briefly mentioned before, “Like a Champion” has received heavy comparisons to the works of Rihanna, with critics noting the song’s breezy and carefree vocal delivery.
As also described before, “Come & Get It” is a tribal electropop and popstep song, which contains a Bhangra beat, sonic drops, and influences of Indian music. Lyrically, “Come & Get It” is about a person's attempt to rekindle a previously ended romance. “Forget Forever” is a dance-pop and synthpop song that contains an EDM beat and house music breakdowns. Lyrically, it is about a breakup. Sam Lansky of Idolator said the song is an “electrifying dance-pop banger with a monolithically great chorus and a storming, anthemic beat, plus a big house break.” Nate Jones of Popdust called “Forget Forever” “bright and expansive”, going on to say that Selena’s vocals “fly over an EDM beat that can’t help getting us ready for summer.”
“Save the Day” is a “thumping” Latin pop and house music song. “B.E.A.T.” is a “sexy” urban hip-hop song described by Jon O’ Brien of Yahoo! Music as “minimal spoken word electro”. Christina Drill of Popdust said “B.E.A.T.” was “infectious and definitely racier than usual for Selena with the chorus saying, “It’s a big bad world but I’m not ashamed / I like the lights in my hand and the beat in my face”. Um…what’s “racy” about those lyrics.๐ค Lol.๐“Write Your Name” has been described as an “exotic” sounding, electronic dance, and house music song. As the song even contains a rap verse by Selena, as well as elements of dubstep. O’ Brien of Yahoo! Music once said that, “Forget Forever” and “Write Your Name” both manage to tiptoe into ‘hands in the air’ territory without succumbing to the usual Guetta-style bombast.”
When it came to promotion for this album, Selena promoted Stars Dance through a number of interviews and televised live performances. On April 8, 2013, she appeared on On Air with Ryan Seacrest to promote “Come & Get It”. On April 14, 2013, Selena gave her FIRST televised performance of “Come & Get It” at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. That performance saw Selena in a ICONIC “all-red, ‘earthy’” outfit, and received a generally positive reception. On April 16, 2013, Selena also appeared on Dancing with the Stars to perform “Come & Get It”. On April 25, 2013, Selena appeared on and performed “Come & Get It” on The Late Show with David Letterman. On April 27, 2013, Selena performed the song yet again at the 2013 Radio Disney Music Awards. But because Selena donned a bindi for her performances of “Come & Get It”, she came under fire by the Universal Society of Hinduism for her use of the religious symbol. Selena did not perform “Come & Get It” again until May 19, 2013 where she performed it at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. And days later, she performed the same song on The Graham Norton Show.
On May 30, 2013, Selena appeared at the MuchMusic Headquarters, where she performed “Slow Down” for the FIRST time. On July 4, Selena performed both “Slow Down” and “Come & Get It” at the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. Selena appeared on This Morning in the U.K. to perform “Come & Get It”. And to coincide with the release of the album, Selena performed “Come & Get It”, “Slow Down”, and “Birthday” on Good Morning America. In September, Selena appeared on Live! with Kelly and Michael to perform “Birthday”. And following the release of “Slow Down”, Selena appeared on The View to perform that. Selena performed “Slow Down” again on The Late Show with David Letterman. Selena also performed “Slow Down” on The X Factor in the U.S. ., and she was selected to be the halftime performer during the Dallas Cowboys vs. Oakland Raiders game held on Thanksgiving in 2013. Where, for the show, she performed a medley of “Like a Champion”, “Slow Down”, and “Come & Get It”. The album was further promoted through her 2013 worldwide Stars Dance Tour, to which she visited countries such as the U.S. and Asia. The Stars Dance Tour made over $36 million at the box office. And although the tour was originally meant to feature dates in Australia and Japan, the Stars Dance Tour was cancelled due to personal issues.
On April 7, 2013, “Come & Get It” was released as the lead single from Stars Dance. And, as of July 2013, the song became one of Selena’s most successful singles, peaking at #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100.๐๐ As well as being certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA.๐On May 7, 2013, the music video for “Come & Get It” premiered on MTV. It was directed by Anthony Mandler. (Whoever that is. I’m guessing a big director.) On June 3, 2013, “Slow Down” was released as a promotional single, via an instant digital download with the pre-order of the album on iTunes. “Slow Down” was produced by The Cataracs and David Kuncio. (Again, don’t know who those people are, but I’m guessing major producers.) On August 13, 2013, “Slow Down” was later released as the album’s official second single, and it peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100.๐The official music video for “Slow Down” was uploaded to YouTube on July 19, 2013.
As briefly mentioned before, the album received mixed reviews from “music critics”. Positive remarks went toward the overall production of Stars Dance, as well as its lyrics and Selena’s vocals.๐๐Mixed reviews went toward her inability to create her own musical identity.๐As she was being compared to singer Rihanna on several occasions. Which, she didn’t ask for. That’s not Selena’s fault that people were comparing her to other artists. That doesn’t mean she didn’t have her own musical identity, because I think she did and does. Just her unique voice alone sets her apart from other artists.๐๐ At Metacritic, which apparently assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, Stars Dance received an average score of 59. Which, again, apparently indicates “mixed or average reviews”. However, Tim Sendra from AllMusic awarded Stars Dance three-and-a-half stars out of five. He pointed out “Slow Down”, “Save the Day” and “Undercover” as highlights, and he also said that “Selena’s reliably strong vocals and the variety of sounds, it adds up to be another fine entry in her catalog and just another example of why Selena Gomez is one of the best pop stars making music in 2013.”๐
Stephen Unwin from Express.co.uk compared Stars Dance to Vanessa Hudgens and said, “Both [Gomez and Hudgens] have now turned their attention to themes of a more adult nature, this new album of Selena’s being one of them and she’s just about pulled it off.” Two Guardian reviews were issued. The first one by Kitty Empire who awarded Stars Dance three out of five stars. However, the second Guardian review by Hermione Hoby was more mixed and awarded the album two out of five stars. As Hermione clarified that “if she really wants to be considered a grown-up pop star, Selena Gomez is going to have to find some better hit-makers.”๐She even compared the work, including “Like a Champion”, to Rihanna.
Like also mentioned before, August Brown from the Los Angeles Times found that Stars Dance was “the kind of album one makes in 2013 if you want to keep the pop sugar of the Disney tween cabal but mix in some broken glass and a club bathroom nosebleed. Its productions are rooted in today’s pop-EDM default mode […].”๐Natalie Palmer from EntertainmentWise took the perspective of other critics and commentators, saying Stars Dance should have been praised for “trying something new.”๐ As she (Natalie) discussed “Stars Dance isn’t what you would expect from a girl who was once a Disney princess. Many often go for the bubblegum pop or the angry rock chick but the 21-year-old has opted for an edgier genre and a unique sound.” However, Matthew Horton from Virgin Media awarded Stars Dance two stars out of five.๐He criticized Selena’s “lack of personality” in most songs and felt her vocal abilities on the record “doesn’t help”.๐And he concluded saying, “It’s all too identikit, [and] could be anyone with a grasp of average dance-pop.”๐What? Was he listening to the same album I was? Even Simon Price from The Independent awarded Stars Dance one star out of five, criticizing the lack of effort saying that, “Even given these facts, it’s a pop record, which means one killer track would redeem everything. Predictably enough, it never comes.”๐Again, what album is he listening to? Ron Harris from The Huffington Post also felt that Stars Dance did not live up to expectations, citing Selena as a “vibrant young woman of Disney pedigree [who] simply punched the clock and worked through an already cooked musical plot foisted upon her. Selena might be an incredibly talented and interesting person with much to offer artistically, but we’ll never find out at this rate.”๐He also found Stars Dance to have less personality than Selena’s previous records with The Scene.๐To which, I disagree with everything he said.
But again, who cares what the “music critics” had/have to say about this album, because REAL fans know how GREAT, UNFORGETTABLE, and ICONIC this album was and still is. Plus, the numbers speak for themselves. As the album sold 97,000 copies in its first week of release, and it debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200.๐๐ Making Stars Dance Selena’s FIRST album to reach the top of the chart, as well as her HIGHEST first sales week for an album.๐๐Until it was surpassed by her SECOND 2015 solo album release, Revival, which sold 117,000 its first week. Stars Dance did fall to #8 on the chart during its second week, selling an additional 31,000 copies. Which was a 68% drop from the previous week’s sales. Stars Dance fell to #13 in its third week and the album continued to decline on the chart the following week, too, landing at #18. Stars Dance fell to #25 in its fifth week. However, following that, Stars Dance rose to #24 on the chart.๐ And following that rise, Stars Dance had a 23% increase in sales, selling 17,213 copies and reaching #21.๐๐Despite that though, Stars Dance dropped to #33 the following week, selling just over 7,000 copies. The album spent a total of 25 weeks on the Billboard 200.๐With its last appearance being on the week ending January 25, 2014.
Stars Dance, however, did debut at #1 on the Canadian Albums Chart, with sales of 16,500 copies in its first week.๐๐ Making it Selena’s FIRST #1 in the country.๐ And it sold more than 5,000 in its first week, which was more than her previous album.๐On August 27, 2013, Stars Dance received a Gold certification from the CRIA, for sales exceeding 40,000.๐The album also had its FIRST chart entry on the New Zealand Albums Chart, entering in the TOP 5 at #5 itself.๐In the U.K., Stars Dance debuted and peaked at #14, and spent a total of four weeks on the chart.๐๐The album also peaked at #9 in Ireland, and spent a total of six weeks on the chart.๐๐Stars Dance peaked at #8 in Australia.๐ Apparently, Stars Dance was more successful in international territories. In Mexico even, Stars Dance debuted at #1 on the Mexican Albums Chart, and later went on to be certified Gold in the country for selling 30,000 copies.๐๐The album also reached #2 in Portugal, and was certified Platinum in the country.๐๐ Stars Dance peaked at #8 in Brazil, and also received a Platinum certification in the country.๐๐
But, as I always say, the numbers and all that chart stuff really means nothing to me, but they were some wins for Selena and therefore something I thought was still worth mentioning here.๐But those facts and statistics did not make me enjoy this album any more or any less than I did before doing this album relisten. Nor did they affect my thoughts and opinions about the album back then, when I was a teen listening to this album for the first time, because I never looked at that stuff back then, either. I’ve always just LOVED this album for what it is, and that’s why I am SO EXCITED to finally get to talk about the songs from this album and share my ranking of them here with you.๐๐๐ค๐ฉถBut first, before we really get into the songs from this album and my ranking of them, as always, I want to just give my brief history and memories associated with this album.๐
Once I got Selena’s FIRST album as a kid, I always looked forward to when she came out with a new one then after, because I was going to buy it no matter what. So, just like with all of Selena’s previous Disney albums, when this album came out in 2013 I bought it as soon as possible. Since this album came out in the summer, and my birthday had already passed, and it wasn’t a special holiday or anything at that time, I guess I just bought this album with whatever money my dad gave me at the time. In other words, I actually have no memory of if I went to the local Walmart by my house at the time to buy this album, or if my dad ordered it for me for it to have then gotten sent in the mail to our house, but all I remember is getting the CD version of this album when it came out that summer in 2013 ,(Well, probably a few days after it came out, because I don’t think I ever bought one of Selena’s CDs on the exact day that it was released) and being in my room whatever summer day that it was and listening to the CD in my radio that I had (and still have). I remember just pressing play and listening to it from beginning to end and then back again as I looked through the lyric book that it came with. And I remember, of course, LOVING it. I do remember thinking it was obviously quite different from anything she had ever done before, because not only was she solo for the first time but the overall sound and vibe was just different and definitely much more mature. I could tell that she grew up. But again, I LOVED it. EVERY SONG. And then after that day, I remember just listening to this album any chance I got. It was definitely my favorite album/CD at the time. At least, it was definitely the one I listened to the most in 2013. In fact, I remember another day in the summer of 2013, my dad, little sister, and I traveling to go visit my older sister at some 4-H project achievement thing and Stars Dance was the CD we had playing in the car on the ride there and back. I’ll also never forget that, because that was a pretty fun, unforgettable day. I also remember when it was my little sister's 8th grade dance and when my dad, older sister, and I went to pick her up from her dance "Come & Get It" was playing on the radio. 'Cause again, like I mentioned before, "Come & Get It" was always on the radio in 2013. Which again, I wasn't complaining about it.๐
Then of course I remember watching all the music videos for each single on TV or YouTube, whenever they were released for the first time. The “Come & Get It” music video I specifically remember watching for the first time when it premiered on TV, and I also remember watching the music video for “Birthday” when it was released on Selena’s YouTube channel, and being like "when I turn 21 that’s exactly the energy and party I want to have". Which, I had a GREAT 21st birthday, but it was just more tamed and with my close family. But, speaking of my 21st birthday, I did play this exact album that day because it was a MUST.๐๐๐๐ถ๐ฟ I also remember watching all of Selena's performances on TV shows and stuff. Most of all the ones that I mentioned earlier.๐บ And I remember watching on YouTube all of Selena’s interviews that she did for the album as part of her press tour, and once the Stars Dance Tour started, I remember also watching other peoples videos that they uploaded of that on YouTube. So, I was all about this album and still am.
After 2013, when I listened to this album THE MOST, years after I still went back to listen to this album or my favorite songs from it, because it truly never gets old. In other words, I’ve always gone back to listen to certain songs from this album throughout the years, “Birthday” being the go-to song to play whenever it’s someone's birthday that I know. But, I actually hadn’t listened to this album from beginning to end in a very long time before doing so for this post. In other words, the last time I did listen to this album, or songs from it, was just last year when my little sister (Amber) and I were watching old tours on YouTube from some of our favorite artists, and Selena’s Stars Dance Tour was one that we watched. So I heard the songs again then, but I wasn’t fully paying attention the whole time and it wasn’t like listening to the album from beginning to end. All that to say I was still very curious and EXCITED to relisten to this album recently, and so that’s what I did.๐
When Stars Dance came out in 2013, I always said that it was Selena’s BEST album. But then, when Rare came out in 2020, that changed that. ‘Cause Rare is definitely Selena’s BEST album that she’s made so far. Stars Dance is still one of her TOP 3 BEST, in my opinion, though. Although, after re-listening to it this time around, I will say that I no longer think Stars Dance is Selena’s BEST album when it comes to her Disney discography, but it’s a VERY close second to the album from her Disney discography that I think is the MOST BEST. Though again, there is nothing wrong with this album. Every song is GREAT. That's why I wanted to create this post to talk all about it, and why I can’t wait any longer to get into this ranking. So, what are we waiting for? There’s no more keeping this post undercover, don’t slow down now, tell ‘em it’s your birthday, walk like a champion, make the stars dance, and let’s get into A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Selena Gomez’s Stars Dance Album!๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ค๐ฉถ๐

Well, that concludes A Definitive Ranking of EVERY Song from Selena Gomez’s Stars Dance Album!๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ค๐ฉถ I really enjoyed getting to go back and listen to these songs and reminisce about the memories I have of them. And I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did creating it, and that it also brought back some FUN, NOSTALGIC memories for you, too.๐
This album was extremely hard to rank. I mean I knew it was a FANTASTIC album, but I didn’t know it would be this hard to rank the songs from it. ‘Cause it was a little surprising to me that the songs from this album that were once my favorites as a teen, and that were even my favorites just a couple years ago, are not the same as my most favorites now. But this album is still a BANGER, UNSKIPPABLE, and one of Selena’s BEST. And I would still go back and listen to EVERY song from this album, because even the songs that ranked lowest on this list are not bad. Just when compared to the others they had to be ranked lower.
For this to have been Selena’s FIRST SOLO album, she really came out with a BANG and set the bar high. This album truly never gets old, still holds up, and is just one of the BEST, if not, THE BEST dance-pop album. But again, that's just my opinion. I would LOVE to know, what’s your favorite song(s) from Stars Dance? And is this your favorite album by Selena?
